Sara Zandieh

Sara Zandieh was born in Tehran, Iran and moved to Washington D.C. with her family when she was five. Growing up outside of D.C. in Maryland, Sara and her family closely followed politics both due to physical proximity and cultural proximity being Iranian-American. She assumed jobs consisted of lawyer, politician, and journalist. Loving stories and storytelling plus speaking English, Farsi and French, Sara decided early that her career would be an international journalist following in the footsteps of Christiane Amanpour.

She studied journalism in college and landed great internships, including one at CNN. While on interning she was always drawn to the directors and the stories behind the headlines. It was then she decided to be the storyteller instead of the reporter. She started working on documentaries and attend Columbia University where she got her MFA in Film Directing and Writing. There she met her women’s writing circle The Bush Administration and dove into creating.

She’s always been drawn to telling stories from her Iranian-American perspective. Her first film, Pool Party, was filmed in Iran allowing her to both spend time getting to know Tehran as an adult and make the film on a shoestring budget. Her latest film, A Simple Wedding, is a romantic comedy telling the story of a multi-cultural marriage and it’s available now on iTunes and Amazon.

Today Sara lives in Los Angeles. She’s directing - including an episode of Good Girls on NBC, writing and dreaming up her next project. When not working on her films, Sara spends time connecting with her strong group of girl friends in both L.A and New York City.
