Powerful Ladies Favorite Mediation Apps

By Shae LaPlace

There are lots and lots of ways to start meditating. And since we’re constantly connected with our smartphones, it makes perfect sense that an app might be the simplest place to start. Here is a list, in no particular order, of some apps we think will work for our Powerful Ladies.

The Breathing App
What is it:
Created by Deepak Chopra (Author), Eddie Stern (Yoga Teacher), and Moby (Musician), this app focuses on helping the user achieve the optimal breathing for effective meditation. This technique is called resonance. Resonance is a rate of breathing proven to have health and relaxation benefits. It benefits the body by creating balance within our nervous system. The Breathing App is designed to guide you into resonance, so that you can experience all of its benefits.

Why we like it:
This app is very straightforward and focuses on the most basic element of meditation, breathing. It uses the connection of breathing to the rest of the body to focus on a traditional form of meditation that can be done anywhere, anytime. The Breathing App is also free and does not require any monthly subscription.

10% Happier: Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics
What is it:
Created by Dan Harris, the Author of the Book 10% Happier and Mediation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How To Book, this app is a personalized guide to meditation based on your individual needs. A two-week program designed with the idea of making meditation a readily accessible practice for all people. Using many of the lessons from his book, Dan Harris created a no nonsense app for anyone willing to give it a go.

Why we like it:
Dan Harris also runs a Podcast called 10% Happier based off of the book. The podcast, book, website and the app all work cohesively together to get you on your meditation game. The app also allows you forever access to the content from your personalized program. 10% Happier also offers options that work well for beginners, and acknowledges how hard it can be to sit still. We love that Harris is aware of how many people might have a hard time believing the benefits of meditation, and this app addresses that skepticism and gets you on board.

Insight Timer
What is it?
The creators of this app noticed that while there are plenty of meditation apps out there, they’re often costly both to run and to the consumer. Insight Timer aims to maintain its low overhead so that it can remain 100% free to all users. This app offers an extensive variety of guided meditations and simple timed meditations. The app is straightforward and easy to use. Allowing you to make your meditation as complex or as simple as you would like.

Why we like it:
Insight Timer keeps meditation as it should be. Simple. And Free. We love that the creators of this app are focusing on keeping the service it provides completely free. Meditation by nature is a free practice that should be available to everyone. This app upholds that and keeps things simple for its users.

Calm
What is it:
The Calm app does a great job of advertising, so there’s no doubt that you’ve heard of this one. Calm focuses not only on meditation but how it can help you get better and more restful sleep. The app boasts over one hundred guided meditations, but that’s not all that Calm has to offer. Calm also comes stocked with what they call Sleep Stories. Much like a bedtime story, these are relaxing stories, read by voices that we know and love. Additionally, the app includes a Body section. A place with guided movement and stretching sessions. Calm also boasts a wide variety of relaxing music and sounds to guide you through your practice.

 Why we like it:
Each of this apps many features are flawlessly designed to make mindfulness accessible. The practice of meditation as a sleep aid gives users a clear cut reason to start meditating. The fact that Calm also uses multiple approaches to mindfulness means that there’s a little something for everyone. We also love that the marketing for this app has been so effective. Not only has it generated buzz about this app but also meditation apps all together.

 Headspace
What is it:
Headspace is designed for those completely unfamiliar with the world of mindfulness and meditation. The app introduces users to the concepts of multiple methods of meditating. Audio and visual aids help to guide you to understanding, and successful mindfulness. Through this app you can subscribe to collections of sessions. Each collection helps you to progress through your own mindfulness journey. Headspace can take you from meditation beginner to guru, in just a few minutes a day.

 Why we like it:
Headspace teaches its users to meditate in a straightforward way that is backed by science. Although this app is subscription based and can be costly, the beginning collection is free. This way you get the chance to decide if you like it before you commit to spending money on it every month.

 YogaGlo
